The Chairman announced that they exported 265 million 587 thousand 172 dollars in the first three months of last year. And the city's exporters reached 321 million 215 thousand 70 dollars with a 20.9 percent increase in the same period this year.

Murzioğlu stated that the exports were made to 148 nations and five free zones during this period. The greatest importers were Morocco, the United States, Peru, the Netherlands, and Georgia, in that order.

Exports in 72 Different Sectors

Chairman Murzioğlu also talked about the most exported products from Samsun in the January-February 2022 period. "Iron steel, tractors, bicycles, motorcycles, and other land vehicles, their parts and accessories topped the list. Milling products such as malt, starch, inulin, and wheat gluten followed. Fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other aquatic animals were high on the exports list. Boilers, machinery, mechanical devices and tools, nuclear reactors, their components, and parts were also among the top five products. Samsun has exported in 72 different industries in the 3-month period."

Exporters Are Writing A Success Story

Moreover, Murzioğlu emphasized that the export figures in the first three months of the year were promising for the future.

"We are now in a period in which cities compete against each other in the economic world. Samsun exceeded the export figure of 1 billion dollars for the first time in its history last year. As our exports increase, our product range, and the number of countries we export to also increase. These are pleasing developments for our province. We witness that our companies write success stories with great determination, by overcoming obstacles, producing without hesitation, and creating employment despite difficult conditions. I congratulate the officials and employees of all our companies that contribute to the development of our city and country."

2021 Was A Year Full of Records for Samsun

Murzioğlu said that Samsun had closed in the year 2021 with a record, increasing its exports by 74.5 percent compared to the previous year. Making exports worth 1 billion 304 million 986 thousand dollars in 2021, Samsun rose to 18th place in Turkey by jumping three steps at once.

The month with the highest increase in exports in Samsun was recorded in September with 155 million 385 thousand dollars.

Samsun's New Export Target is 5 Billion Dollars

Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mustafa Demir said that the new target of the city was 5 billion dollars. Underlining the importance of SMEs in exports, President Demir noted that more emphasis should be placed on innovation and technology.

Speaking at the Ministry of Industry and Technology's European Enterprise Network Samsun Conference held in Samsun, Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mustafa Demir made evaluations about the country and city economy.

Using the Record-Breaking Momentum Is Crucial

Explaining that Samsun is in a very serious momentum in exports, Mayor Demir said, “In 2002, Samsun's export was 36 million dollars. If we take the current export figures as a basis, we have exceeded the target of 1 billion dollars this year. By the end of the year, we have a very high probability of reaching 1 billion 150 million dollars. We have grown 30 times in exports. This is a good indicator. But we still have a long way to go. We are already wondering what our 2022 export figure is. We've crossed the $1 billion mark. Our next export target is 5 billion dollars. I believe that together we will achieve this goal.”

Samsun is in a very good economic era with government policies, ministry investments, KOSGEB (Small and Medium Industry Development Organization), universities, chamber of commerce and industry, local governments, public administrations, and political mechanisms. President Demir added, “We are going through a period when we realize our opportunities and activities. Looking ahead, I hope we will make significant progress.”

SMEs Are Very Important for the Goal

Mentioning the importance of SMEs in Turkey's exports, President Demir said that SMEs accounted for 40 percent of total exports. He added:

"Our SMEs have a very important place in production and export. Every strong firm has an SME period. We are going through an important process. The next 3-4 years are also very important. Samsun is the center of the region. While looking at our city, we need to feel the responsibility and potential behind us in a geography stretching from the border of Istanbul to Artvin and Central Anatolia.”

A dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator, and oven are indispensable items for the continuation of daily life. White goods products, whose sizes, features, and prices have changed considerably since the first period of their production, are becoming more and more common. Turkey, one of the world's most important white goods production areas, has succeeded in creating effective brands in the global market in recent years.

Domestic appliance production in Turkey is one of the leading export items with an increasing foreign trade surplus. Turkey exports more than half of the domestic appliances produces by many countries in the world, especially European countries. Turkey, which is the main production base of many local and foreign companies in domestic appliance production, ranks second after China in this field. The sector, which entered 2022 very effectively, managed to increase its export rate.

Domestic Appliance Export Reached 6.5 million Units in the First Quarter of the Year

In the first quarter of 2022, Turkey increased its exports in 6 main white goods groups and exported 6.5 million products annually. In the first quarter of 2022, total sales increased by 2%, while exports increased by 6%. Despite the epidemic, the sector managed to increase its sales in both domestic and foreign trade. So, what is the secret to this success in exports?

Investments, R&D Studies, and Global Brands Lead to Increasing Exports of Domestic Appliance

The white goods sector is constantly receiving investment, as Turkey makes an export-oriented production. Being the second-largest production base in the world after China, research and development studies become widespread. R&D studies are extremely beneficial in terms of achieving global market dominance as well as high-tech and value-added products. The domestic appliances industry is a versatile industry, with employment for hundreds of thousands of people and thousands of sales and technical service points.

Tips on Global Potential in the White Domestic Appliance

It is expected that the domestic appliance sector will continue to grow in the coming years and reach 557 million units and 285 billion USD globally in 2024. So, what are the factors that trigger production? First of all, the increasing prevalence of digitalization made it necessary for the products produced in the domestic appliances industry to keep up with it.

The application of the latest technological products and smart technological applications to domestic appliances necessitates the production of a continuous top model. In this case, the consumer changes his/her domestic appliances more frequently than before to keep up with the digital transformation and to have a more comfortable daily life.  Changing consumer demands, the spread of individual life independent of family, and constant relocation increase the demand for domestic appliances.

Rising Steel, Energy, and Oil Prices Affected Domestic Appliance Production

Inflation, which is effective on a global scale, and the raw material supply shortage caused by the Russia-Ukraine war are among the important factors pushing the sector. In addition, the sector is also affected by the increase in flat steel prices. Despite all these developments, Turkey overtook Germany to become Europe's largest steel producer. Turkey is the 7th largest producer of steel in the world. Steel is an important and strategic raw material not only for domestic appliances but also for almost the entire manufacturing sector. After the trade embargo applied to Russia, countries' tendency toward steel produced in Turkey stands out in sectoral production.

What are the Sectoral Expectations?

Since steel is a strategic product all over the world, countries can apply various taxes and export restrictions. Steel, which is the raw material of white goods production, experienced difficulty in supply, especially during the covid-19 pandemic. In order to overcome this situation, Turkey resorted to abolishing some taxes. For example, the abolition of the Inward Processing Regime was welcomed by the industry. However, in order for the production to continue without interruption, HRC production should be increased, and other taxes should be abolished.

Turkey World's Second Largest Production Base

The domestic appliance sector provides employment for 60 thousand people directly and 600 thousand indirectly. Turkey is the world's second-largest production base in this field, meeting 7% of the world's white goods production. To put it in numbers, exports in the first quarter of the year increased by 6% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 6.5 million units. Domestic and foreign sales increased by 2 percent in total to 8 million 688 thousand 496 units.

Asia-Pacific Region and Europe Stand Out as Important Markets

The Asia Pacific region is the region where more than 40% of the world's domestic appliances sales are realized. Europe, Turkey's largest market, has a market share of more than 20%. According to the report of Turkish Domestic Appliances Manufacturers, between the years 2019-2024, the production of domestic appliances is expected to increase by 13.1% globally and the sales turnover to be obtained from this production by 15.6%.

The Trade Between the UK and Turkey in Recent Years

The UK is and has always been an important trading partner for Turkey. It was Turkey's third-largest export market after the USA with $13.7B. In addition, the United Kingdom was the 6th largest economy in the world at that time. With the Free Trade Agreement's entry into force on January 1, 2021, trade between Turkey and the UK has started to expand. And is expected to grow even more in the near future.

Without this agreement, 75 percent of exports to the UK would face a tax burden. And Turkey would likely confront a loss of approximately 2.4 billion dollars. The free trade agreement signed by the UK and Turkey is the fifth largest trade agreement. It comes after the UK's agreements with Japan, Canada, Switzerland, and Norway.

Trade between Turkey and the UK amounted to 25.25 billion dollars in 2019. In the first eleven months of 2020, despite the COVID-19 conditions, exports to the UK amounted to around 10 billion dollars. Total trade in goods and services between the UK and Turkey was $22.2B in the four quarters to the end of Q4 2021, an increase of 20.2%. Or $3.6 billion from the four quarters to the end of Q4 2020. As we see in the data, trade between Turkey and the UK grows every year. After the Free Trade Agreement, there has been an even more impressive growth in the total trade value.

Current Trade Between Turkey and the UK

The United Kingdom overtook the United States as the fourth country to which Turkey made the greatest foreign sales in the first quarter of the year. In that period, the United Kingdom's proportion of Turkey's exports reached 5.54 percent. Germany, the United States, and Italy had the greatest exports in the first three months of 2022, respectively.

Turkey’s automotive industry exported the most to the United Kingdom during this time period. Exports to the United Kingdom from the automotive industry climbed by 7.3 percent in the first quarter. It reached $812.6 million.

According to experts, a $3 billion export volume in the first quarter of 2022 is a solid indicator of the economy's recovery following the COVID-19 epidemic. It also shows Turkey's rising manufacturing capabilities. As one of Turkey's most important export markets, the United Kingdom maintains a critical place in international trade.

26 companies from Turkey participated in the Proposte Fair and the International Observatory Fair. The fairs took place simultaneously in Como, Italy. Uludag Textile Exporters' Association (UTIB) participated in the fairs. The Association attaches great importance to increasing the share of Turkish textiles in the world markets. UTIB’s event during the fair brought together buyers from Italy, Europe, and the USA with Turkish companies. UTIB’s chairwoman, Pınar Taşdelen Engin, noted that the fairs will pave the way for exports worth $5 billion.

After the pandemic break, UTIB accelerated its participation in international fairs. Proposte and International Observatory Fair are among the leading fairs in the world. Participating in these prestigious fairs is a great advantage for Turkish firms. They introduced the production power, quality, and designs of the Turkish textile industry to the world's important buyers.

Proposte is a textile fair for communities such as textile editors, furniture manufacturers, and wholesalers. Entry to the fair is free. The fair has been bringing together the pioneers of the textile industry in Italy since 1993. In 2022, 69 exhibitors, 29 from Italy and 40 from abroad, participated in Proposte. On the same day as Proposte, Ascontex Promozioni promoted the International Observatory. It is actually part of Proposte. This event showcases high-end upholstery fabrics and curtains. Moreover, the exhibitors introduce their latest and most exclusive products to the visitors.

UTIB took the first steps in these fairs. Their aim is to establish new collaborations thanks to the Sectoral Trade Delegation. 20 companies from Turkey participated in the Trade Delegation.

New Networks

20 companies from Turkey participating in the Trade Delegation had one-on-one meetings with important buyers. They introduced their cutting-edge designs and established new commercial networks. Thus, great collaborations emerged. As a result, this will have positive effects on exports and the economy.

Italy and other EU member countries show interest in these fairs every year. This year, the fair attracted great interest from visitors from the USA, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. The physical organization of the fairs after a long period increased the interest. Visitors from several countries turned into an advantage for Turkish companies.

These fairs bring together the biggest buyers of the world. Thus, it was effective for Turkish companies as well. The companies participating in the fair and the Trade Delegation are quite satisfied. They had face-to-face meetings with significant buyers from the USA, Europe, and especially Italy. Thanks to these meetings, they could establish new commercial networks. Moreover, they seized the opportunity to enter new markets. Participating companies will receive the rewards of these efforts in the coming days.

Rise in Exports

Chairwoman Engin evaluated 2021's export data and made predictions for 2022. “Home textile exports increased by 25.5 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year. Turkish companies exported home textile products to 201 countries and regions. Exports hit 3 billion 125 million dollars.”

“The pandemic changed the way people view their homes. Even if the pandemic is completely gone, people will not see their homes as before. Therefore, there will be a need for renewal at home. As a result, this will increase the export potential of our home textile industry. We can 4-5 billion dollars in a short time if we accelerate the promotional activities, especially the fairs.”

More Participation in Organizations

UTIB continues its efforts to increase exports. In April, it brought member companies together with foreign buyers at the CNR EVTEKS Fair in Istanbul.

Engin emphasized that such organizations are significant for the industry and exports. “Proposte and Observatory Fairs are two important organizations for the sector. Right after these fairs, we will host world brands at the Hometex Fair. It will be held in Istanbul between 17-21 May. As UTİB, we will continue to support our industry with different organizations.”

Engin added that as UTIB, they will take part in many more organizations. “We will continue to participate in qualified organizations at home and abroad. Our aim is to increase the export potential of the sector. We will also continue to support companies.”

Goals Achieved

Business volume continues to increase every year at the International Observatory Fair. UTİB participated in the fair for the fifth time. 18 of the 26 companies participating from Turkey are members of UTIB. The exhibitors are distinguished companies. All companies participating in the fair left with great happiness. Their satisfaction will also be reflected in the export figures. If the participation in the fairs gains momentum, it won’t be difficult to reach 5 billion dollars, as Engin stated.

These ranged from high-tech goods like computers to low-tech products like calculators. As the first quarter of 2022 came to a close, the numbers were announced and they show that Turkey is on the upswing again.

The "National Technology Movement", which is carried out under the direction of the Ministry of Industry and Technology and aims to ensure Turkey's economic and technological independence, is yielding results. Thanks to the work carried out with the vision of the "National Technology-Oriented Industry", Turkey's exports of manufacturing industry products have increased rapidly in recent times in line with the technology intensity.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and the Turkish Institute of Statistics, exports of high, medium-high, medium-low, and low technology intensity products amounted to $212 billion 827 million last year. Compared to 2020, an increase of 33.1 percent drew attention. Of that, nearly $6.5 billion was for high-technology products and $71 billion was for medium-high technology products. Exporting 1.4 billion dollars to 129 countries in the first quarter of the year, the city of Sakarya in Turkey increased this figure to 2 billion 242 million dollars by the end of May.

According to the data of the Turkish Exporters' Assembly, the "automotive city Sakarya" ranked 7th. It followed Istanbul, Kocaeli, Bursa, Izmir, Gaziantep, and Ankara in its first-quarter exports.

Continuing its rise in production and foreign sales, the city contributed 2.5 percent to the country's exports in the first quarter of the year.

In the first quarter of the year, the city made 1 billion 392 million 278 thousand dollars of foreign sales to 129 countries and 10 free zones.

Sakarya continues to add strength to the economy primarily with automotive. Home to production facilities such as Toyota, TürkTraktör, and Otokar, the largest share in the exports of the city was the automotive sector with 87.3%. In the first 3 months period, 1 billion 216 million 616 thousand dollars were exported in the sector.

Ferrous and non-ferrous metals took second place in foreign sales with 27 million 666 thousand dollars. This sector was followed by the chemicals and products (21.5 million dollars) and the air conditioning industry (19.2 million dollars). Finally, steel (15.4 million dollars), cement, glass ceramics, and soil products (15.1 million dollars).

Most Exports Are to the UK

In the three-month period, the city made the most export to the United Kingdom with 152 million 838 thousand dollars. Compared to the same period of the previous year, exports to this country decreased by 3.5 percent.

The second country to which Sakarya exports the most was Poland, with 136 million 204 thousand dollars. Compared to the same period of the previous year, exports to this country increased by 43.6 percent.

Spain followed Poland with 133 million 721 thousand dollars. And France followed with 124 million 727 thousand dollars, and Germany with 123 million 974 thousand dollars.

Sakarya's 5-Month Exports Exceeded 2.2 Billion Dollars

If we look at the latest data announced by the city’s commerce chamber president Akgün Altuğ, in May, Sakarya exported 353 million dollars to the whole world. However, since the beginning of the year, total exports have reached 2 billion 242 million dollars.

Sakarya contributed 353 million dollars to the country's exports and became the 8th province with the most exports in May. And it maintained its 7th place in cumulative terms throughout the year.

The city experienced a 29 percent drop in shipments in May compared to April 2022. And there was a compensated drop of 1% compared to May last year. Despite all of this the total exports for the first five months exceeded 2 billion 242 million dollars.

Undoubtedly, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine comes first among the biggest effects of the decline. In a sectoral sense, the province's leading automobile company's short-term and planned maintenance-repair stops are effective in exports. With the end of the war and the process of returning to normal, Sakarya will reach the level it deserves in terms of export performance.

Most Exported Sectors and Countries

In the 5-month period, the automotive sector met 86 percent of all Sakarya's exports. In addition, Sakarya exported to a total of 121 countries, including free zones. Germany, Spain, Poland, the United Kingdom, and France are among the top exporting countries.

Exports to Imports Coverage Ratio Is 196% in May

Considering the April import figures announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute, imports decreased by 5.3 percent to 271 million 440 thousand dollars. And the foreign trade balance was 261 million 176 thousand dollars, and the ratio of exports to imports was 196%. In the 4-month period, foreign trade volume increased by 3.1% and reached 3 billion 208 million dollars, and the ratio of exports to imports was 166%. In this view, Sakarya ranks 12th in the country's imports in April with a share of 0.92%.

SATSO Chairman Evaluated the Data

SATSO Chairman of the Board A. Akgün Altuğ evaluated the current foreign trade figures announced by the Turkish Exporters Assembly and the Turkish Statistical Institute.

"The consumption habits that have changed with the pandemic have now changed the course of the world. Many countries have revised their production and consumption balance accordingly. We need to continue to work hard in this scenario and according to the data announced. The process puts both producers and consumers in a difficult situation. Above all, it is much more important for us to produce value-added products with highly competitive power. We must keep up with the technology, think ahead of the times, and continue to develop by reflecting this on production. I would like to thank all of our business world who work without losing their consciousness and desire to produce under these difficult conditions."
